December 10, 2009- In early November 2009, six SERVErs (Mike, Megan M., Analise, Molly, Briana, and I) ventured out to the Second Harvest Food Bank with Jake. Second Harvest one of five food banks that gives to citizens in need throughout Virginia.
Their mission is “to serve, at the lowest cost possible, hungry people – children, adults, the elderly and the less fortunate by any definition – by collaborating with an ever-widening network of nonprofit and faith-based food distribution agencies throughout our 26-county service area. We seek to improve the overall quality of life of those whose needs we endeavor to meet. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate hunger in Southwestern Virginia.”
That particular day their were about 40-50 people volunteering from all over. After a tour of the facility and a video about safety, we were sent to sort products to be distributed; basically we threw out any product passed the expiration date.
Typically one would think that a food bank distributed food products but little did we know…we sorted everything from eye drops to enemas! It was hard work but such a great volunteer experience!
