serve_logo_scribble_CMYKDecember 10, 2009 – This semester (and hopefully for the rest of my time at Virginia Tech) I worked with The Big Event at Virginia Tech. The Big Event is a student-run community service organization that completes hundreds of projects throughout the neighboring communities on one day during the spring of every year. At Virginia Tech, students, faculty, and staff complete service projects in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and the New River Valley. In short, it is a day of thanking our surrounding communities, individual by individual, regardless of need or socioeconomic status, for giving so much to us.

The Big Event was started in 2002 as an expansion effort from Texas A&M. We serve everyone as long as it meets our safety checks and we obtain the necessary amount of volunteers to perform the needed project. (This is where I come in! I’m a member of the Projects Subcommittee and we are responsible for finding, planning, and organizing the service projects.)

This year we would like to have 7,000 volunteers to complete 1,000 projects. Volunteer registration opens on February 1st (as well as project request) and volunteers may register as an individual or as a team. Help us make this the biggest Big Event at Virginia Tech yet!
