December 11, 2009 – I recently came in contact with a local Blacksburg Community Theatre Company called NRV Stage. Although I have just begun to work with them, I have already met some fabulous people. NRV stage is a nonprofit production company that focuses on producing quality and fun performances for the entire community.
Last week, casting calls for the spring production of Tom Sawyer begin. The show is really exciting because it will be the largest production put on to date. NRV stage also offers weekly acting classes for children with a small act production at the end of each semester. The program was launched this past fall and has proven to be very well received. There are high hopes for the spring classes.
As I have grown up, performing arts has been a major part of my life. My own hometown also has a strong performing arts group. We have a beautiful historic theatre (similar to the lyric) where a number of sell-out plays have been put on for years. There is a rare disappointment in them.
Groups like these are a sign of a healthy community and give students and adults opportunities that are not always available in schools or other places these days. These types of programs also give a community a unique bond and a way for residents to relate to one another and get to know each other a little better.
I always say you know you are in a good place when the community calendar is filled with weekly farmers markets, festivities, and local performing arts groups. I am so excited to begin working more with NRV Stage and have to opportunity to work with them on launching their newest program that is set to be performed in schools all over the New River Valley by homeschooled students. They are truly doing a tremendous job of including the entire community in a wonderful way.
